11 websites to find remote work for digital nomads
One of the biggest questions we’ve received since starting our Youtube Channel has been “How do you make money?” and while we answered that question in a vlog a couple of weeks ago we realized it probably didn’t help you figure out how you could do the same.
We know that the money and job aspect of van life is often one of the biggest roadblocks for most people hitting the road and beginning this lifestyle. Thankfully there are a lot of options out there - you just have to do a bit of research and get creative.
When starting Van life, RV life, or Skoolie life there are a few different paths you can take:
Work for someone else entirely as an employee full-time, part-time, or only seasonally.
Work as a freelancer and/or have your own business.
Do a bit of both; work for someone else while also having a side hustle that helps supplement your income.
While there is so much to say about each of these paths (and we plan to in several other follow-up blogs) today we’re specifically going to go over what websites you can utilize to find a job right now so you don’t have to worry about whether or not your boss or the company you work for allow you to work remotely.
But before we jump into that here are some tips we think may be useful for you:
If you love your current job yet can’t wait to start traveling more be sure to ask your current company if you can stay on as a remote worker. I’m sure you may have already thought about this or have had a conversation though we want to put it out there just in case. It’s worth presenting the BENEFITS to your boss or company about how this helps THEM. The overhead of having employees in an office is quite high and work production is higher for employees who are happy.
If you know that your current job will not allow it AND you also would like to save more money for your travels or van build out then start exploring some of the websites below for part-time or contract work right now. This will help you not only save money for your build-out but also help position you for a full-time position in the future or even help you launch your own business. There are a lot of options out there for work so even if you think your skills may not transfer into the online world take a peek at the websites below and be willing to get outside of your comfort zone and explore new possibilities!
If you are just out of school or you loathe your current career path and want to try something new, explore internship options right now even if you have yet to start your life on the road. This could be a great option IF you have time in your schedule to take on non-paid work and are unsure what you want to do going forward.
Whatever you do know that the perfect job is out there for you. Sometimes the path may not be as straightforward as you planned but there are ways to make it happen if you want to make it a reality.
Let’s get to it!
11 websites to find remote work for digital nomads
There are A LOT of jobs in the online space that are in the tech field (website design, graphic design, software engineering, etc) though we searched each of these websites to ensure there are other career opportunities as well. Marketing, customer support, sales, teaching English, content writing, healthcare, administrative work, accounting, and more are all listed on these sites so be sure to go through each one to see what will work for you.
Flex Jobs: This website claims to be the #1 resource for remote work, work-from-home, and flexible job opportunities. There are a lot of options here and I highly suggest signing up for their newsletter as they send new job postings and other helpful articles frequently. Another benefit to this site is that each job listing is vetted to ensure it’s a quality listing so you also know it is real.
Dynamite Jobs: they offer a range of different Job options including contract gigs, part-time, and full-time. Besides Flexjobs I’ve heard of freelancers in the van life community who say they’ve had success with this website. Be sure to sign up for their newsletter too as they’ll send out job notifications regularly.
Remote OK: It looks like there are a lot of tech job options here but we also found a pretty decent variety of other options too. And just like the name says, you know that remote work is definitely OK with any company posting on the site. One of the things I liked most about this site is that without even clicking on a job posting you can see the salary listed and you can click on the option at the tip that filters out all tech jobs so if that isn’t your thing you don’t have to waste time searching through every listing.
Jobspresso: While this particular site didn’t have thousands of listings I found that they had some really unique job opportunities for transcriptionists, teaching, executive assistants, and more.
Working Nomads: From Legal to Healthcare to Finance this site offers a plethora of options for those looking to start their nomadic lifestyle.
We Work Remotely: This site is a bit more well-known than some of the other options on here so there may be a bit of competition but with that comes a lot of opportunities as well. One thing we noticed about the site was that it lists the top 100 remote companies. This could be useful as you can do a bit of searching on their own websites to see if there are any listings not posted here. You could also reach out personally to the company as well.
Remote Co: We found this site to be pretty user-friendly and easy to navigate while also providing other remote work resources like articles, career coaching, and more. With it being one of the smaller job boards the competition may not be as strong as some of the other options listed here.
Skip The Drive: This is a great resource for entry-level positions in the online space! If you think you have little to no skills that can be transferred to the online world or are just graduating, I would highly recommend checking out this site.
Remote Work Hub: This site claims to have 10x more listing and better filters than the leading job board. While we don’t know if that is true or not it is worth checking out. One thing I liked about this site was that it listed employee growth rates over the past couple of years so you can get a better feel for the success of the company.
Remoters: This was another job board that lists salary right upfront so you don’t have to spend time searching a posting just to see if it will fit your financial needs. It also seems like they have a diverse amount of job options too.
Workew: The one unique thing we noticed about this job board was that it lists crypto jobs. Besides crypto, it also offers listings for internships, freelance work, along with part and full-time gigs.
Bonus Suggestions!
I (Crystal) have been working in the online space for over 7 years now and have built my health-based business utilizing a lot of services from companies that are fully remote. Through this, I’ve noticed a trend in what types of companies offer their employees the ability to work from anywhere or at least to be fully remote within their country.
Besides the listing of companies, We Work Remotely offers on their site you can do some digging yourself into companies that offer their employees the option to work virtually.
Search the following terms on Google, Duck Duck Go or another search engine and start browsing the companies website for Job Opportunities:
Email Newsletter Service Providers (ex: aweber, mailchimp)
Social Media Schedulers (ex: hootsuite, later)
Online Appointment Scheduling (ex: acuity, dubsado)
Sales Funnel Builders (ex: clickfunnels, kajabi)
Website Builders (ex: kajabi, wix)
If you have a friend who has an online business, reach out to them to ask them if they have heard of any companies hiring in the online space. Because they are often subscribed to these companies’ newsletters they’ll most likely get notifications for any positions that they are hiring for however they may not think to tell you unless you have specifically let them know that you are looking for a new position.
Sometimes finding a job can take some creativity and ingenuity and if you ever feel overwhelmed about the process remember to take a deep breath and focus on one step at a time as you prepare for your new life on the road.
